7 Ways to Avoid Dessert When Dieting

Whether you are undergoing weight-loss diet? When at home was the same problem can be felt. Here are some ways you can do to avoid the temptation of eating dessert:

Empty the kitchen cabinets?

The best way to do so that your diet works is by clearing the kitchen of a snack. Do not keep snacks in the kitchen or pantry, because you would be tempted to pick it up. And when you have to go shopping to the supermarket, avoid displaying hallway snacks, such as pastries and sweet breads.

Share with friends?

If you have a friend who is also on a diet and want to taste the dessert, you can buy it in small portions and then separate into two parts. That way, you can still enjoy the cake, though limited portion.

New London station bamboozles visiting Beatles fans

LONDON (Reuters) - It has to be the most famous pedestrian crossing in the world, immortalised by the Beatles on the cover of their Abbey Road album in 1969.

Situated just outside the north London EMI studios, the crossing enjoys listed status for its "cultural and historical importance" and draws thousands of tourists every year.

But a growing number of visitors hoping to take photos of themselves recreating the enigmatic, single-file crossing of the famous foursome are finding themselves in a very different part of London - thanks to a railway station.

Since the station was built last year and named after another Abbey Road at least 10 miles (16 km) away, tourists have been descending on the distinctly less glamorous east London neighbourhood of West Ham.

Instead of the leafy mansions and prim tree-lined streets one might expect of one of the most expensive postcodes in Britain, visitors are met with a train depot and a series of industrial parks.

"There are always loads of tourists here," said 68 year old local resident Jack Walker. "They get here, look around, wonder where the crossing is, find out it's on the other side of London, and head back to the station."

Tourist misfortune, however, sometimes makes for much local hilarity.

Rui Araujo, a council patrol officer, recalls watching a young American couple mimicking the group's famous crosswalk pose, apparently unaware that the pock-marked east London zebra-crossing bears little resemblance to the real thing.

Kirpal Singh is not complaining though. His Star Newsagents has seen a daily average of 30-40 additional customers, many of whom buy bus passes or stock up on drinks and chocolate to sustain themselves on the long trek back across the city.

But while a few East London Abbey Road shops have benefited from the mix-up, a number of St John's Wood businesses -- situated in the leafy residential district that is home to Abbey Road Studios -- are failing to see the funny side.

Blaming the confusion and corresponding loss of tourist revenue on the construction of the Docklands Light Railway link (DLR) at East London Abbey Road, they are lobbying Transport for London (TfL) to change the name of the offending station.

"It was a bigger problem over the summer when everybody was already out in east London and using the DLR for the Olympics, but it's still an issue for us, as numbers are down" said Zoe Waterman of the Beatles coffee shop.

Thus far, however, TfL have shown no inclination to change tack.

"It is unfortunate that some visitors sometimes get confused by the odd duplicate place names in our large and varied city... but, this situation is also a reminder that nothing beats some in-depth research," a spokesman said.

Australian tourist Sam Wharton offered a slightly more nuanced take as he photographed the real crossing: "I had no difficulties in finding this place, you've got to be a bit dim to go to the wrong end of London, right?"

For the record, those thinking of visiting the real thing will find St John's Wood tube station a considerably more convenient starting point than Abbey Road.

Cybercrime law in an SMS, Facebook nation

As Filipinos remembered the declaration of martial law 40 years ago last month?and the curtailment of many freedoms that it entailed?the incumbent president signed into law the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

If the barrage of opposition and flurry of protests online and offline were to be used as gauge, Republic Act 10175 is easily one of the most unpopular laws to be enacted in quite a while.

Barely a month had gone by after its passage, and 15 petitions have already been filed before the Supreme Court asking to either repeal it or amend certain provisions deemed by its critics as unconstitutional.

The law?s most questioned provisions include the real-time collection of traffic data, the authority of the department of justice (DoJ) to ?restrict or block access to computer data? without a court order (popularly known as the ?takedown? clause), and online libel.

Why wiretapping is illegal while monitoring of traffic data is allowed is not strongly justified. The DoJ, the central implementing authority, assures the public that content will not be touched without a court order.

But some IT experts say that one cannot collect communications data without exposing content. The law says the government can require the telcos and ISPs to cooperate in carrying out this activity. For sure, this would have some implications on the way mobile phone and internet are provided, and on the demand for such services.

Critics are also wary that the DoJ alone can decide on blocking access to sites. The rules and regulations on implementation, which have yet to be drafted, can clarify and set the parameters for this huge responsibility. They cannot, however, change the fact that the law allows one agency to have that much power.

It is online libel that really caught the ire of many who oppose this law, as it incurs graver penalties compared to ordinary libel and allows prosecution for libel in both media. They are unanimous in saying that libel, in the sphere of social media, is considered a suppression of free speech in its most basic form. Thus, the coinage of the term cyber- or e-martial law.

Several groups?some formed via Facebook?held assemblies and public forums, and issued statements of defiance (including a website-defacement spree by a group of hackers) with this clear message: this is not the way to ?protect and safeguard? us against cybercrimes.

Legislators were quick to respond, as they are wont to do when election season is near. To date, 10 senators have expressed their reservations about the same law that they recently enacted. Some, including its principal author, have made specific proposals on how to amend it. President Aquino, who defended his decision to approve the law (which he otherwise had the power to veto), is also open to making changes. Taken at face value, the government is doing the right thing ? ?listening? to the people and taking a second look at a flawed law. But this same flip-flopping and inconsistency, done in Philippine politics with great ease, is also a good reason to be wary of how prudently and effectively this law will be enforced.

While it is high time for the country to have a law on cybercrime, the current version covers too broad a spectrum of offenses and too vague a set of criteria for prosecution, for comfort. It threatens the rights and freedoms of a whole village for the offenses of a few. The law?s jurisdiction?mobile phones, smart phones, computer networks, and other devices connected to the Internet?are also very personal realms such that any form of government check is sure to infringe on one?s right to privacy.

Ultimately, the cybercrime law confirms how so out of touch lawmakers still are to the value of ICT and how citizens use it. The Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order which allows it 120 days to decide on the petitions. This should also give the Office of the President and Congress time to reflect on this: with each one of 92 million Filipinos using a mobile phone and 30 million using Facebook, there is much at stake in regulating ICT.

Longtime GOP Senate moderate Arlen Specter dies

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? For most of his 30 years as Pennsylvania's longest-serving U.S. senator and prominent moderate in Congress, Arlen Specter was a Republican, though often at odds with the GOP leadership.

He helped end the Supreme Court hopes of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork, who was nominated by Ronald Reagan. Decades later, he was one of only three Republicans in Congress to vote for President Barack Obama's stimulus.

His breaks with his party were hardly a surprise: He had begun his political career as a Democrat and ended it as one, too.

In between, he was at the heart of several major American political events. He rose to prominence in the 1960s as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory in President John F. Kennedy's assassination. He came to the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980 and was a key voice in the confirmation hearings of both Bork and Clarence Thomas.

Specter died Sunday died at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said his son Shanin. He was 82. Over the years, Specter had fought two previous bouts with Hodgkin lymphoma, overcome a brain tumor and survived cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.

Intellectual and stubborn, Specter took the lead on a wide spectrum of issues and was no stranger to controversy.

In one of his last major political acts, Specter startled fellow senators in April 2009 when he announced he was joining the Democrats. He said he was "increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy," though he said the Democrats could not count on him to be "an automatic 60th vote" that would give them a filibuster-proof majority.

He had also concluded that he was unlikely to win a sixth term as a Republican, and his frankness about why he returned to the Democratic Party was packaged in a powerful TV ad by his primary opponent, then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, who hammered away at the incumbent as a political opportunist.

"My change in party will enable me to be re-elected," Specter says in TV news footage used in the ad.

The announcer ends the ad saying, "Arlen Specter changed parties to save one job ? his, not yours."

And Democrats picked Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral, over Specter in the 2010 primary, ending his decades of service. Sestak lost Specter's seat to conservative Republican Rep. Pat Toomey in the general election by 2 percentage points.

Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia prosecutor and during his time on the Warren Commission.

In 1987, Specter helped thwart Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court, earning him conservative enemies who still bitterly refer to such denials as being "borked." But four years later, Specter was criticized by liberals for his tough questioning of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearings and for accusing her of committing "flat-out perjury." The interrogation, televised nationally, incensed women's groups and nearly cost him his seat in 1992.

Specter took credit for helping to defeat President Bill Clinton's national health care plan ? the complexities of which he highlighted in a gigantic chart that hung on his office wall for years afterward ? and helped lead the investigation into Gulf War syndrome, the name given to a collection of symptoms experienced by veterans of the war that include fatigue, memory loss, pain and difficulty sleeping. And following the Iran-Contra scandal, Specter pushed legislation that created the inspectors general of the CIA, which later exposed Aldrich Ames as a Soviet spy.

But he was not afraid to buck his fellow Republicans.

As a senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Specter pushed for increased funding for stem-cell research, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease, and supported several labor-backed initiatives in a GOP-led Congress. He also doggedly sought federal funds for local projects in his home state.

In 1995, he launched a presidential bid, denouncing religious conservatives as the "fringe" that plays too large a role in setting the party's agenda. Specter, who was Jewish, bowed out before the first primary because of lackluster fundraising.

Specter's irascible independence caught up with him in 2004. He barely survived a GOP primary challenge from Toomey by 17,000 votes of more than 1.4 million cast. He went on to easily win the general election with the help of organized labor, a traditionally Democratic constituency.

Specter was diagnosed in 2005 with stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Announcing the diagnosis with his trademark doggedness, Specter said: "I have beaten a brain tumor, bypass heart surgery and many tough political opponents and I'm going to beat this, too."

"Arlen Specter was always a fighter," Obama said in a statement Sunday. "From his days stamping out corruption as a prosecutor in Philadelphia to his three decades of service in the Senate, Arlen was fiercely independent ? never putting party or ideology ahead of the people he was chosen to serve. He brought that same toughness and determination to his personal struggles."

Specter wrote of his illness in a 2008 book, "Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate," saying he wanted to let others facing similar crises "ought to know they are not alone."

Cancer handed him "a stark look at mortality" and an "added sense of humility," Specter told The Associated Press.

Born in Wichita, Kan., on Feb. 12, 1930, Specter spent summers toiling in his father's junkyard in Russell, Kan., where he knew another future senator ? Bob Dole. The junkyard thrived during World War II, allowing Specter's father to send his four children to college.

Specter left Kansas for college in 1947 because the University of Kansas, where his best friends were headed, did not have Jewish fraternities. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and Yale law school in 1956. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953.

Friends say his childhood circumstances made him determined, tough and independent-minded. Specter considered his father's triumphs the embodiment of the American dream, a fulfillment that friends say drove him to a career in public life.

He entered politics as a Democrat in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, when he was an assistant district attorney who sent six Teamsters officials to jail for union corruption.

Working on the Warren Commission in 1964, Specter was the chief author of the theory that a single bullet had hit both Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally, an assumption critical to the conclusion that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the subject of ridicule in Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK."

After working on the Warren Commission, he returned to Philadelphia and challenged his boss, James Crumlish, for district attorney in 1965. Specter ran as a Republican and was derided by Crumlish as "Benedict Arlen." But Crumlish lost to his protege by 36,000 votes.

Specter lost re-election as district attorney in 1973 and went into private practice. Among his most notorious clients as a private attorney was Ira Einhorn, a Philadelphia counterculture celebrity who killed his girlfriend in 1977.

Finally, in 1980, Specter won the Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Richard Schweiker, defeating former Pittsburgh Mayor Pete Flaherty.

After leaving the Senate in January 2011, the University of Pennsylvania Law School said Specter would teach a course about Congress' relationship with the Supreme Court, and Maryland Public Television launched a political-affairs show hosted by the former senator.

He also occasionally performed standup comedy at clubs in Philadelphia and New York. He played squash nearly every day into his mid-70s and liked to unwind with a martini or two at night.

A funeral was scheduled for Tuesday in Penn Valley, Pa., and will be open to the public, followed by burial in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

Specter is survived by his wife, Joan, and two sons, Shanin and Steve, and four granddaughters.

Felix Baumgartner successfully lands after highest freefall from edge of space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? Austria's Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday (Oct. 14, 2012) after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission. Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,137 km jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.

After flying to an altitude of 39,044 meters (128,097 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed Sunday morning a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

Baumgartner landed safely with his parachute in the desert of New Mexico after jumping out ofhis space capsule at 39,044 meters and plunging back towards earth, hitting a maximum of speed of 1,137 km/h through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:19-minute long freefall. Baumgartner's jump lasted a total of 9:03 minutes. Countless millions of people around the world watched his ascent and jump live on television broadcasts and live stream on the Internet. At one point during his freefall Baumgartner appeared to spin rapidly, but he quickly re-gained control and moments later opened his parachute as members of the ground crew cheered and viewers around the world heaved a sigh of relief.

"It was an incredible up and down today, just like it's been with the whole project," a relieved Baumgartner said. "First we got off with a beautiful launch and then we had a bit of drama with a power supply issue to my visor. The exit was perfect but then I started spinning slowly. I thought I'd just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I'd lose consciousness. I didn't feel a sonic boom because I was so busy just trying to stabilize myself. We'll have to wait and see if we really broke the sound barrier. It was really a lot harder than I thought it was going to be."

Baumgartner and his team spent five years training and preparing for the mission that is designed to improve our scientific understanding of how the body copes with the extreme conditions at the edge of space. Baumgartner had endured several weather-related delays before finally lifting off under bright blue skies and calm winds on Sunday morning. The Red Bull Stratos crew watching from Mission Control broke out into spontaneous applause when the balloon lifted off.

* The data on the records set by the jump are preliminary pending confirmation from the authorized governing bodies.

Chevron's Legal Troubles in Ecuador Continue | Glass, Lewis & Co ...

For nearly two decades, Texaco, which was acquired by Chevron in 2001, has been embroiled in legal battles with the residents of Ecuador. The central issue of these proceedings stems from a 1970s and ?80s-era joint venture between Texaco and Petroecuador, a state-owned petroleum company. According to the Amazon Defense Coalition, in the course of its Ecuadorian operations, Texaco, among other things, dumped more than 18 billion gallons of toxic waste into Amazonian waterways, abandoned more than 900 waste pits, burned millions of cubic meters of gases with no controls, and, as a result of pipeline ruptures, spilled more than 17 million gallons of oil. Further, local citizens now claim that as a result of the massive environmental destruction caused by this pollution, cancer rates and other oil-related health problems have increased among those residents who live near the company?s former operations.

While in accordance with agreements with the government, the company has spent nearly $40 million for its share of remediation efforts after it ended its Ecuadorean operations, plaintiffs continue to seek civil claims. In early 2011, an Ecuadorian judge ordered Chevron to pay $8.6 billion for environmental damages. However, the judge increased this amount to $18 billion because the company refused to make a public apology. This legal battle continued in the United States, where in 2011, a federal judge in New York granted a preliminary injunction?barring the plaintiffs from seeking enforcement of the Ecuadorian ruling outside of the country. However, the preliminary injunction was overturned on appeal later that year. Further, on October 9, 2012, the Supreme Court announced that it was refusing to hear the case, effectively leaving the appellate court?s decision in place.

According to an emailed statement reported by the Globe and Mail, Chevron states that, although it is disappointed with the latest decision, it ?will continue to defend against the plaintiff?s lawyers? attempts to enforce the fraudulent Ecuadorean judgment and to further expose their misconduct?? Chevron has long maintained that the allegations made in these cases are illegitimate, fraudulent and a result of bribery on the part of the Ecuadorian courts. Further, in 2011, Chevron stated that it had filed a civil lawsuit under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (?RICO Act?) as well as other state and federal laws against the lawyers and consultants leading the litigation and PR campaign against the company. Chevron stated that it was seeking ?a court declaration that any judgment against Chevron in the Ecuador lawsuit is a result of fraud and therefore is unenforceable? and that it was also seeking damages associated with the cost of defending the Ecuadorean litigation.

Since Chevron does not currently have significant assets in Ecuador, the plaintiffs will have to go elsewhere to enforce the judgment issued by the Ecuadorian court. In May of this year, lawyers representing the Ecuadorian people began to pursue their more-than-$18 billion judgment by filing a claim in Ontario Superior Court in Toronto, demanding that the company surrender its Canadian assets. The plaintiffs? lawyers have stated that this ?is just the beginning,? and that they are ?analyzing and?preparing a series of enforcement actions that are going to be presented around the world in the near future.?

Given the seriousness of these allegations and the amount of the judgment awarded to the plaintiffs (to compare, BP paid $20 billion to fund claims following the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010), it is only natural that shareholders are expressing concern about how Chevron is managing these issues.

Recently, some investors have grown increasingly worried about the ongoing legal battles plaguing the company and the litigations? potentially negative impact on shareholder value. In May 2012, shareholders representing $580 billion in assets under management sent a letter to Chevron urging the company to ?revaluate whether endless litigation is the best strategy and discuss with shareholders whether the company could adopt a more productive approach, such as reaching an equitable settlement, to both provide for a proper remediation for past environmental damages and better protect future shareholder value.?

Shareholders are not the only ones expressing concern over how Chevron is managing this issue. In June 2012, Congresswoman Janice Schakowsky sent a letter to SEC chairman Mary Schapiro stating her concern regarding whether Chevron was in compliance with SEC regulations. Specifically, Schakowsky cited a report that ?details multiple contexts in which Chevron may have failed, over a period of years, continuing through the present time, to disclose material information to investors concerning the likelihood, scope and impact of its potential liability for massive environmental damage to a large part of the Ecuadorian rainforest and the associated health and other negative effects of that damage upon tens of thousands of indigenous famers and individuals.? Schakowsky encouraged the SEC to promptly consider ?whether Chevron has followed its legal obligations in informing current and potential investors about the risks to the company inherent in the Ecuador litigation and, in particular, about the impact of the $18.1 billion judgment rendered against Chevron early in 2011.?

Given the stunningly complicated nature of Chevron?s ongoing litigation, it is highly unlikely that these issues will be resolved in the near future. However, as these legal battles consume considerable company resources and leave the company exposed to significant risk, shareholders should continue to remain vigilant in ensuring that Chevron is managing and disclosing these issues properly and sufficiently.

Coleen Rooney reveals pregnancy as Wayne is made England - Metro

The 26-year-old WAG told fans how 'over the moon' the pair are as she broke the news of her pregnancy via her Twitter account.

She told her 840,000 followers: 'A few people guessed, so news is out ha!! Me Wayne and Kai are thrilled that we are expecting a new addition to our family around May time.

'It's still only early but bursting with excitement! Also wanted the news to come from us, before anyone else!'

Manchester United star Wayne, also 26, re-tweeted the message.

It's certainly been a good week for Wayne as it was confirmed today that he will be taking on the captain role for tomorrow's World Cup qualifying game against San Marino.

And Coleen was first in line to send him her congratulations, tweeting earlier today: 'Fantastic news @WayneRooney Captain for game tomorrow!!! So proud of you!!!'

It's the first time Wayne has been handed the captain's band since England's 1-0 defeat to Brazil in a 2009 friendly.

Last night, after revealing their family is set to grow, the pair were quickly inundated with messages of congratulations from fans and celebrities.

Not all of the messages were entirely positive, with chat show host Piers Morgan joking: 'Congratulations on your fabulous news @WayneRooney & @ColeenRoo - and fingers crossed the baby gets its mother's looks...'

Luckily Coleen saw the funny side.

Stoke City player and Rooney's England teammate Michael Owen also took to Twitter to congratulate the couple, writing: 'Didn't think you had it in you to fill another pram @WayneRooney !!! Still a couple behind me! Congratulations to you both.'

And fellow WAG Danielle O'Hara tweeted: 'Congratulations to the lovely @ColeenRoo on her pregnancy bet Kai is so excited to have a little brother or sister X.'

Coleen later thanked fans for their messages, writing: 'Thank you all so much all our lovely messages!! We are over the moon x.'

The couple, who married in Italy in 2008, welcomed son Kai in November 2009.

Wayne has previously described becoming a father as 'the proudest moment of my life', saying he got a bigger kick from fatherhood than football.

A spokesman for the couple said last night: 'Wayne, Coleen and their families are thrilled and delighted that Coleen is expecting their second child.

'They wanted to share the great news on their popular social networking sites and that is why Coleen tweeted the news ahead of any speculation.

'Everyone is thrilled for them.'

Meanwhile, Coleen was back to work after announcing their happy news as she headed to a shoot for the Littlewoods' spring/summer 2013 collection.

She kept her fans updated, tweeting: 'Day 2 of @littlewoods s/s 13 shoot xxx.'

NTT DOCOMO launches 10 new Android devices including Galaxy S3 and Note 2

Android Central

As Japanese carriers love to do, NTT DOCOMO just dropped a huge release of Android devices for the holiday season with 9 smartphones and a tablet. The headline phones that are bound to draw the biggest attention and sales are part of its "next" line, which includes the Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3) and Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The devices physically look very similar to their European and North American counterparts, but as is usually the case the software is a bit tweaked for the Japanese market.

As far as hardware specs go, they're very similar as well. We're looking at the same Super AMOLED 720x1280 screens at either 4.8 or 5.5-inches, an Exynos 4412 quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 100mbps LTE networking and both are launching with Android 4.1 on board. One thing found on the Japanese models that you won't really see anywhere else is the One-Seg digital TV antenna -- a staple on Japanese devices.

The Galaxy Note 2 will be launching in November, with the Galaxy S3 to follow in December. More pricing information for these devices and the rest of the expansive DOCOMO lineup -- we recommend taking a look at the sweet Android flip phones -- can be found at the source links below.

ESPN college football guru Beano Cook dead at 81

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? The folksy ESPN college football commentator Beano Cook has died.

The 81 year-old commentator had worked for the sports network since 1986 and was the sports information director at his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh, from 1956 to 1966. The university announced Thursday that Cook had died in his sleep.

"He was one of a kind," ESPN executive chairman George Bodenheimer said. "There never was and never will be another Beano. His combination of humor, passion, love of college football and his engaging personality left an indelible mark on the sport and touched anyone who knew him."

Cook grew up in Pittsburgh before graduating from the university in 1954, and was known for his love of the college game and, in particular, championing the cause of northeastern teams including Penn State and Pitt before either school was a nationally known power.

"Beano Cook was an American original. His passion, depth and breadth of knowledge, and humor were unique," ESPN host Chris Fowler said. "He was an invaluable early mentor to me and friend. His imprint can still be seen on GameDay each week."

Cook, like many in the business, fell in love with simply being around the competition. With a career that took him so many places, it was hard not to get wrapped up in it.

"Getting to know the athletes really provided me with my fondest memories," Cook once said. "That was the most fun."

Cook was ABC Sports' press director for the NCAA after leaving the SID job at Pitt, and later worked in as a writer or media representative for the St. Petersburg Times, Miami Dolphins, the Mutual Radio Network, and CBS before joining ESPN.

"Beano was a unique human being and he was college football at ESPN. I am indebted to him. Beano was a tremendous help at the start of my television career and I would not be where I am today without him," ESPN analyst Lee Corso said. "I am forever grateful to Beano and the time we spent behind the GameDay desk."

Carroll Cook received his distinctive nickname as a youth, when his family moved from Boston to Pittsburgh. A neighbor of the Cook family said, "Oh, from Boston, like the beans" and tabbed the seven-year-old "Beano."

Cook, like so many of his career stops, is fondly remembered at Pitt, where the media room in the Petersen Events Center is named after him.

"Beano left a legacy never to be matched. Not matched in accomplishment, wit or loyalty," Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said. "Like so many others, it has been my privilege to be the beneficiary of Beano's counsel and friendship. He loved the University of Pittsburgh and his name is synonymous with all good things at Pitt.

"We all feel a tremendous void in our lives today."

Many in and around college football concurred on Thursday.

"It's a sad day for college football," Penn State coach Bill O'Brien said. "Especially in the state of Pennsylvania, where he was an icon."

Acute vs. Chronic Low Back Pain - Johnston, RI Patch

Odds are that if you are over the age of 18 you have had at least one instance of lower back pain. I know I have.? It's not a fun experience.?

Back pain, if the symptoms are severe enough, is completely debilitating.? You feel like you can't even get out of bed fearing you might move or twist the wrong way sending shooting pain throughout your body.? There are different ways you should treat acute vs. chronic low back pain.? Here are some guidelines to follow should you be faced with back pain in the future.?

Acute low back pain is an injury that has just occured within the past 24 hours.? Causes can be as simple as fluffing a sheet or sneezing (don't laugh, I've treated people due to this).? Back pain symptoms usually include pain (big surprise there), decreased spinal motion, muscle spasm, and some loss of functional mobility.?

When you have acute low back pain, you want to ice for the first 24-72 hours.? It might not be comfortable but it is the best thing that you can do at first.? Just try to wait it out moving as much as you can comfortably.? Hopefully, the pain will subside and you will be able to get back to your normal daily tasks without needing to visit your MD or Physical Therapist.? If the pain persists longer than the 72-hour mark you can start to use heat to sooth the muscles and hopefully promote some more mobility.? If it does persist you should make an appointment to get some treatment for your condition.

Chronic low back pain is usually pain that persists longer than 30 days. (The exact distinction is a gray area.) The rules are different for low back pain that has lasted this long.? Heat can still be used to help warm up the spine and supporting muscles.? From there, you want to get moving as much as you can.? You can push through a little bit of pain as long as the pain does not spike.? Studies have shown that exercises and moving have been more helpful with chronic pain than resting and avoiding activity.? If you have chronic low back pain then you are going to have some restrictions somewhere.? This means you are going to be weak in some areas and tight/inhibited in others.? You need to consult with a Physical Therapist to make sure you are working on the right muscles.? They will assess what is weak and what movements you cannot perform.? From there you will be assigned exercises and activities that will help to correct your deficits. (You might even get a back massage while you are there. Not half bad.)? With their guidance and your hard work you will be on your way to a healthy, pain-free low back.?

If you have any questions or need treatment for your back please contact me.? If you want to get started on a simple exercise that will help increase your abdominal strength then read here.? I hope that this article provided you with some good information on how to treat back pain.? Thank you for reading.

Chavan junks British-era land leases, rentals now at market rate ...

If you are a leaseholder of a prime property in South Bombay but got the luxury of paying a measely Rs 100 a year, even though the flat was worth crores, here?s some bad news for you!

Six months after a CAG report pulled up the Maharashtra government for not having a policy for renewal of leased public land, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has decided to junk British-era land lease laws and introduce new ones that are in sync with the prevailing market rates.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has decided to junk British-era land lease laws and introduce new ones that are in sync with the prevailing market rates. Reuters

The state government? has revised lease rentals of a total of 1,577 lands situated in the Mumbai city and suburbs. The revised lease rentals, which are fixed on ready-reckoner rates, would be effective from January 1. The only relief here is that Chavan will not slap the ongoing market rates fully. Rental for residential purpose will be 20% of the ongoing rate, for industrial purpose it will be 25%, and for commercial use it will be 30%.

Chavan has identified 1,282 properties on lease in Mumbai city, of which the lease of 517 has expired, while in the suburbs there are 295 properties and the lease of 149 has expired.

Most of these leases were given during the British Raj for 50, 99 and 999-year periods and over the years, the rent of these properties has remained unchanged. Currently the government only earns Rs 6 crore from these long-term leases.

However, from now on the long lease will not be extended to more than 30 years. Due to the revision in lease rentals, the total revenues to the state exchequer have been pegged at around Rs 500 crore.

The new rules will be applicable only to those whose lease has expired and who are planning to renew their leases. The government will scrutinise every property/flat/house that comes up for renewal. The annual rates will be reassessed every five years.

?Some have expired in the 1970s and 90s and amount of rent needs to be reviewed when they come up for renewal. In Colaba area of south Mumbai, government gets a Rs 17.71 as rent for a 570 sq m land while for a 3,070 sq m land, the rent is only Rs 74.49 annually. This is not acceptable,? Chavan said on Wednesday. Under the new law the Colabla property will generate at least? Rs 3 lakh in rent per annum.

While the move is surely going to fill up the government?s coffers, questions remain over the misuse of land.

Exotic Animals Shipped From Ohio To Sanctuary In Colorado ...

Four bears and four lions were transported from central Ohio on Tuesday, a month after the new statewide exotic animal law went into effect.
?
According to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the animals were being transported at the request of their owner, Andrea Morris, who requested that the animals be taken to a sanctuary after she said she could no longer take care of them.
?
Members of the wild animal sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colo., removed the animals.
?
"It's very difficult. It's very upsetting for everyone. We've all been close to these animals, but they're going to a great place, so how can you not be happy about that," said Morris' friend, Tina Wagner. "These animals were hand raised by her, fed by her, cared for by her, lived in their home with them, slept in their beds with them."

Wagner said Morris took the animals in because no one else would.

A number of the animals were from the Zanesville farm of Terry Thompson, who released more than 50 animals in October 2011, before committing suicide.

Wagner said the Thompson farm became a so-called drop off center for desperate animal owners who could no longer afford their exotic pets.

"Andrea did not start this out on her own, she knew Marion and Terry needed help," said Wagner.
?
Erica Pitchford-Hawkins of the Ohio Department of Agriculture said that moving the animals was a good option.
?
"Right now, any transfer of any dangerous animal is prohibited in the state. That went into effect Sept. 5. In order for the rescue to actually take the animals to Colorado, the Department of Agriculture had to authorize the move, so that's what we came to do," Pitchford-Hawkins said.
?
The Colorado rescue paid for the transportation of the animals.
